Review: Grace of God & Salvation (1 Pet.1:1-2:10)

Grace of God & Submission (1 Pet.2:11-3:12).

  1. Submit to the Spirit (1 Pet.2:11-12). Sojourners, pilgrims (Phi.3:20-21).
  2. A war for our souls (v.11)—flesh v Spirit of God. Trichotomy of man (1 Thess.5:23)

Prior to salvation—a spirit of disobedience (Eph.2:1-3).

After salvation—war with flesh & the Spirit (Gal.5:16-18).   

 

  1. Our conduct needs to be honorable (v.12)—an effective testimony (Phi.1:12-14). 2 Sam.12:13-14. Matt.5:16; Eph.2:10; Titus 3:8; Zech.4:6.

 

  1. Submit To Authority (1 Pet.2:13-17). Ordinance (Institution)(Rom.13:1-7; Titus 3:1). Governors (Judg.4; Matt.27:2; Acts 23:24). For the sake of the Lord (v.13-14). The will of the Lord (v.15). We are bondservants (v.16). The fear of the Lord (v.17).

What about Acts 4:19-20, Acts 5:28-29, Ex.1:15-17, etc.?

Lev.20:13 and Canada C-9 Bill

Use your liberty to glorify God (Gal.5:13).

Citizenship summary (v.17)—honor people, love brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.

 

  1. Submit To Masters (Employers)(1 Pet.2:18-20). Servant. Fear. Harsh.

Our treatment (v.18). Our conscience (v.19). Our patience (v.20).

Slave-master relationship—good and gentle (Col.3:22-4:1; Eph.6:5-9)

 

  1. Jesus Our Example (1 Pet.2:21-25). Our calling—suffer for doing good.

Jesus endured unbelief (John 1:11, a false trial (Mk.14:1; John 11:50), beating, mockery (Mk.14:64-65; 15:16-20), death by crucifixion (Mk.15:29-32), verbal insults (Mk.15:29-32), separation from God (Mk.15:33-34).

  1. Jesus did not sin (v.22)(Isa.53:9; 1 Pet.2:1)
  2. Jesus did not revile or threaten (v.23)(Matt.5:44)
  3. Jesus committed Himself to God (v.23)(Eph.1:11-12)
  4. Jesus did everything for others (v.24-25)(Isa.53:12; Matt.27:46; Mk.15:34; Hab.1:13a; Lk.22:42)

 

Four Things Jesus Did (Summary)—He suffered (v.21), He committed Himself to God (v.23), He bore our sins (v.24), He submitted His stripes for our healing (v.24)

Four Reasons For Christ’s Death (Summary)—Provide the only way for our salvation (Jn.3:16; Rom.5:6-8), that we might be dead to sins (1 Pet.2:11; Col.3:5-11), that we might live unto righteousness (Rom.6:11-13; Gal.2:19-20), that we might be healed (substitutionary atonement, 2 Cor.5:21).

Sheep going astray (v.25)(Isa.53:6; Ps.23:1-4; Ezek.34:11-16).
